Royal Mail Continues Race To The Bottom

While a report out this week confirmed there had been "no significant benefit" for consumers and small businesses following the introduction of competition to the postal sector in 2000. The report also highlighted that liberalisation has led to a "substantial threat" to Royal Mail's future as well for the universal service, where a first class letter is delivered for the same price anywhere in the UK.

Since 2000, this once great public service has become a public laughing stock as the twice daily postal delivery slimmed down to just one. Businesses are now lucky to get a delivery before midday, complaints have soared since the introduction of competition. Yet the 'race to the bottom' for Royal Mail is continuing at full pace. Special Deliveries are no longer guaranteed for 1pm, as deliveries become later and later. Collecting parcels from local delivery offices have become harder as opening hours have been slashed, earlier collections from post boxes means the 'first class' goal posts continue to move downwards.

Over the coming weeks Royal Mail will be introducing 'long and shorts' across it's delivery office network - this means that customers will be getting their mail even later in the day later in the week. While all of this decline happens Postcomm sits in silence, allowing YOUR public service to fail YOU.
