Has Eurovision Lost It's Way?

The Eurovision Song Contest has entertained millions for the past 53 years, but has Eurovision become too big for its boots? Some might remember the simple days when 'proper' European countries entered and we all had fun. In the first Eurovision Song Contest back in 1956, seven countries participated - Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Luxembourg. This year it is a staggering 43 countries competing (thankfully you'll only have 25 of them to watch in the final), but with two semi - finals and obscure countries like San Marino being added one can't help but think the contest is losing it's way.

Dustin the Turkey

Ireland had the right idea by entering Dustin the Turkey with his tongue in cheek song 'Irelande Douze Pointe'. The greatest Eurovision winners have now been relegated to 'no hoper's' as the Eastern block voting ensures countries like Ireland will never win Eurovision again. So why not enter a song to take the piss and have some fun?!

Sadly we (the UK) can not get kicked out of Eurovision, along with Spain, France, Germany and the winning country - because we are the biggest contributors to the contest. Maybe it is time to let Eastern Europe pay for the bloody contest, then the UK could enter a 'fun' song and get ourselves kicked out.

Saturday night looks set to be a long painful night if you are watching the Eurovision Song Contest, which is why this year I'm heading to Leeds for a night of music with the Kaiser Chiefs, The Enemy and Kate Nash.
